End of Year Trip
I know it seems too soon to be talking about the end of the year, but we have something planned that we are very excited about. Each year, we will try to plan a field trip that enhances what we are doing in the AIG middle school curriculum. The principal and the school board have to approve the trip, and we are pleased to let you know we have been approved to go on an end of year trip to New York!
Here is how it ties in with our curriculum: In a couple of weeks, we will study a unit of lessons created around the Broadway musical, Into the Woods. Students will learn about archetypal characters in the play, which weaves together several fairy tale stories. Students will write their own fairy tale in which they are the antagonist. They will create their own setting, plot, and of course, conflict to explore. The fairy tale will take them though the writing process from start to finish.
Since Into the Woods was a Broadway production, we will want to see a live Broadway play in New York. While in the city, students will see Wicked, a Broadway musical which is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Writing a prequel is a very AIG way of thinking. When students return from NY, they will write a prequel to their favorite story using digital story telling.
Also, later in the year, we will study Supreme Court cases dealing with the First Amendment. While in New York, students will see the Supreme Court building as a part of their tour. We will do all we can to make this trip meaningful, educational, and memorable.
You will get a lot more details about the trip soon. For now, we would like to share a few details so you can mark your calendars and begin setting aside funds for your child to go.
· The trip will be March 21 –March 25. We will travel to and from NY during the night on a chartered bus. This allows us to save money on the cost of hotel rooms. We will spend two nights in a hotel in New Jersey. Spending the night in New Jersey is cheaper than NY and the bus can park there free.
· The cost of the trip will be slightly under $500 a person. We are waiting to hear back a quote from the bus company before we give you a final price. We are working on a couple of fund raisers that will help you with the cost. We know $500 is a lot of money, and we don’t want a student not to go because of the money. We will do everything we can to help students get the funds to go on the trip.
· A deposit of $125 will need to be made by November 15 in order to secure your spot. The rest of the money will be due as follows:
o 2nd Deposit of $125 due on December 15
o 3rd Deposit of $125 due on January 15
o Final payment due on February 15
· Enclosed is an itinerary for the trip. We are still tweaking it some, but it is to give you a general idea of what we will do on the trip.
We are very excited about this trip, and we are excited to have this opportunity to experience NY with your child.
